I am a life long martial artist with a passion for teaching and
learning. My journey began in the Philippines as young child informally
practicing escrima and kali and studying traditional karate. In 1980 my family
immigrated to the United States and
we settled in the San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula.
During the 1980's I studied Kenpo Karate with Professor Carlos Valdillez, a
senior student of the legendary Grandmaster Rick Alemany. I earned my black
belt from Professor Valdillez and rose to the rank of 5th degree black belt in
Kenpo Karate.
In 2000, I began my study and developed my passion in Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu. I trained at the Ralph Gracie Academy, Charles Gracie Academy and
with Michael Jen. In 2005 I met and trained with Professor Marco Nascimento and
Master Adilson "Bitta" Lima the founders of Pitbull Jiu Jitsu. I
received my blue belt in 2007 and my purple belt in 2009 from Professor
Nascimento.
In 2013, Peninsula Self Defense became affiliated with the
legendary 7th degree red and black belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Master
Jean Jacques Machado. Master Machado has endorsed Peninsula Self Defense as the
only official Jean Jacques Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu affiliate in the San
Francisco Bay Area. I received my brown
belt from Master Jean Jacques Machado in September 2013. I was honored and humbled when Master Jean Jacques Machado awarded me my black belt in January 2016.

In 1994, I became a police officer in San Mateo County and it
has been my honor to have been able to serve and continue serving the citizens
of San Mateo County. In 2003 I became a state certified Defensive Tactics
Instructor for my police department. In 2005 I began teaching Defensive Tactics
for Administration of Justice Program at the College of San Mateo and at the
South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium. In 2007, I began teaching
a Criminal Investigation course for the Administration of Justice Program at
the College of San Mateo.
While teaching Defensive Tactics at the College of San Mateo,
many students told me they enjoyed my teaching style and many asked me to give
them private lessons. Many of my students told me that it was rare to find a
good instructor and even rarer to find one who can make the classes challenging
but enjoyable. These private lessons formed a humble idea that I could create
an environment where quality instruction and enjoyment meet a happy
medium. It was under these humble
circumstances that Peninsula Self Defense was created.
I believe that anyone's journey into martial arts and/or fitness
starts very much the way my journey started. With very humble beginnings.
However, through hard work and dedication you WILL see results. Come join us.
Let your journey become our journey as well.
